26.Oct.2009 Role Model of the Week: Drew Barrymore

When we were younger there were our older sisters, Disney stars and fairytale princesses. But who do we look up to now that we’ve grown up? Eschewing the drugged-out celebrities and philandering politicians, each week we seek someone who inspires. The talented, the hard-working and the unconventional are put on display here, giving us all something to strive towards.

Since going to rehab at fifteen and subsequently divorcing her parents, Drew Barrymore has taken complete control  of her life and left her past far behind her. She’s a woman with creative integrity, choosing projects on the basis of the value of the story they tell, telling Nylon magazine, “I don’t think I could ever make a movie about women chit-chatting – I think I’d blow my brains out.” She teaches us that we need not make the same mistakes as our parents – our lives are our own to live.
